Golden cap is situated between the town of Bridport and the coastal village of Charmouth, it is the highest point on the South Coast of Great Britain and forms part of the spectacular Southwest coast path. From the Langdon Hill National Trust Car Park this circular walk is around 2.5KM and will take about an hour, depending on how long you stop to admire the beautiful views;
Park at the Langdon Hill National Trust Car Park, free to National Trust members. Here’s the google maps location; Langdon Hill National Trust Car Park Park on the right hand side as you enter. If you’re a member of the National Trust then you can get a free parking ticket at the top of the carpark or alternatively pay for your parking here too.
2. At the top of the Car Park, pass through the wooden gate to the right of the ticket machine
3. Walk around the circular footpath which takes you through the beautiful Langdon Woods with glimpses of the surrounding countryside through the trees, if you’re lucky enough to be here in March or early May you’ll witness a spectacular display of bluebells carpeting the wooded slopes.
4. At the half way point around the hill you’ll come to a sign turning right to Golden Cap. Follow the steps down to the gate at the bottom and then turn right through the wooden gate and across the field, follow the path and steps to the top of Golden Cap.
5. Reaching the top you’ll find a trig point marking the top of the hill. The sea views here are remarkable, especially on a clear day. To the East you’ll see Chesil Beach disappearing into the distance and if you’re lucky you’ll be able to see Portland Bill a distance of some 35KM. If you walk West to the end of the hill you’ll see the ancient Port of Lyme Regis with the famous “cob” or old sea wall protecting the harbour around 6KM away, it took this picture at this spot;
6. Once you’ve had the chance to enjoy the fine views and refreshing sea air, make your way back down the way you came up. On reaching the Langdon Hill circular path, turn right and within 10 minutes you’ll be back at your car.
